What are three things most people don't know about you?

1. I was born in Montreal, Canada.
2. I sang and played guitar in a band during college.
3. I entered and completed two ”Body for Life“ challenges with my wife.

What's been your greatest adventure in life?

Moving from Rochester, MN for a job as a Services Executive in NYC.  Now that was a change in life style.

What's your best childhood memory?

Getting my first dog.  It was a Yellow Labrador Retriever and I called him Oscar after the Odd Couple.  Not sure why I did that but it seemed like a good idea at the time.

If you could have a conversation with a person of your choice, past, present or future, who would that person be and why?

Herb Brooks, Coach of the Miracle on Ice team.  I would like to discuss his leadership approach.  To be able to take a bunch of college kids and win a gold medal in the Olympics was an incredible accomplishment.

What's the hardest thing you've ever done in your life?

Completing the IBM Sales training program in the 80’s.  It was an experience I will never forget.  I learned lessons that I still use today.

Tell us about your favorite hobby.

Playing ice hockey.  It’s required in Canada.

What are you currently reading? What is your favorite book?

I read mostly financial and health magazines.  Smart Money is my favorite.  I hope to get a lot smarter…

Is there a particular place or thing you want to see?

Alaska (Denali) while it is still somewhat wild.

If you could give $10,000 to a charity, what would that charity be and why?

Make a Wish Foundation.  I like the idea of giving people hope and possibly making a difference.

If you weren't on the professional services career track, what would you be doing?

Sales.

What is the path that led you to Professional Services/Consulting?

I started as a Systems Engineer for IBM, Managed a Support Center for IBM and then accepted a position as a Services Executive for IBM.  After 12 years I left to join smaller companies and held positions as Director of Training Services, Consulting Services eventually leading to my current position as VP of Professional Services.

What advice would you give to a recent graduate who just took a job in professional services?

You have to love making your clients successful and develop a thick skin.

Expiring Services - How do you handle?

Our company typically expires services 12 months from the purchase date.  The language in the contract clearly states that we will do this.
However, if there are large chunks of services left we will typically alert the Account Executive to offer an extension if the extension request meets certain criteria (Services are currently being used, active project is scheduled in the next couple months).

Question to the group:  How do you handle expiring services?  Do you alert customers or just have a hard fast rule on expiring them?

Thanks.
